Continued extreme weather across the middle of the United States has simply added to the property damage reports and lists that began back in mid-April. These severe thunderstorms comprised of heavy rain and large hail on parts of Indiana caused many counts of residential property damage as well as commercial. Lightning is being blamed for multiple house fires, even an airplane at Indiana's main airport was damaged.
The National Weather Service and Weather Fusion are both reporting large hail, including one-inch diameter hail that pummeled southern Indiana's Gibson County. The weather service says a record 2.08 inches of rain fell Tuesday in Indianapolis, breaking the previous record for the date of 1.53 inches set in 1930.
Weather Fusion, a reporting agency recorded multiple counts of large hail (Category 5) in Chicago, IL, Milwaukee, WI, and Cleveland, OH. Category 4 hail events were also reported in Springfield, IL, Cincinnati, OH, and Fort Wayne, IN.
WTHR-TV reports that officials at Indianapolis International Airport say a lightning strike damaged an unoccupied US Airways plane early on April 17. First Responders also responded to fires that struck at least three homes in Hamilton County north of Indianapolis which authorities blamed on lightning strikes as the storms swept through. It seems this has been non-stop since Mid-April for this area of the nation, as well as Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
