Russell Burwell, founder of Burwell Nebout Trial Lawyers, graduated from Stephenville High School in 1958, Tarelton State College in 1960, The University of Texas in 1962 and the University of Texas Law School in 1967. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Army stationed in Korea following graduation from The University of Texas. Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Burwell practiced for a year in Dimmit, Castro County, Texas, served 18 months as an Assistant District Attorney in Galveston County, Texas and then practiced with Jerry Gunn in Dickinson, Texas. In 1970, Mr. Burwell began his representation of injured Texans as a member of the firm Simpson, Morgan & Burwell. Mr. Burwell has been Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law since the inception of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1978. He has served as a Director of the State Bar of Texas and Texas Trial Lawyers and President of the Galveston County and Mainland Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and is a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
Mr. Burwell has always been active in the labor movement. He has represented the U.S.W., Local 13-1 (formerly P.A.C.E. Union, Local 4-1 and O.C.A.W., Local 4-449) since 1970. Mr. Burwell was the Galveston County AFL-CIO Man of the Year in 1997.
Mr. Burwell is a pilot, horse back rider, hunter and tournament skeet and cowboy action shooter (past Director of the Texas State Skeet Shooters’ Association). He is married to Phyllis and has three children, Russell G. Burwell III (lawyer), Rebecca Burwell (lawyer in Portland, Oregon) and Jessica Burwell (professional mountain bike racer in Durango, Colorado).
